Top 3 Resume Trends for 2017

In its March employment report, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics announced professional and business services saw a monthly gain consistent with its growth over the last 12 months, with 56,000 new jobs being added. If you’re looking to switch jobs or enter a new field, this upward employment trend means it’s time to pull out your resume and give it a facelift. While your qualifications and work history may be largely the same, there are emerging trends that are quickly becoming the standard.

1.    Skills are Key

Recruiters spend just over six seconds looking at a resume before deciding whether to move a candidate forward in the hiring process or not, Forbes reports. Hiring managers no longer want to see that you are a hard worker or a quick learner, or that you have a positive attitude. Now, they are interested in your hard skills and the value you will bring to their team. . List the relevant systems, programs and apps that you’ve worked with, and help potential employers understand how you will use those skills to their benefit.

2.    What Have You Done? Not, What Can You Do?

You have limited time to catch hiring managers’ attention, so it’s important to emphasize your performance. When describing your previous work history, you probably included your day-to-day activities and your responsibilities. Today’s managers want to know about their candidates’ accomplishments. Did you lead a successful project or save your company money? Explain how. Where you promoted or did you receive any special accommodations? Why?

3.    Branding Matters

In today’s digital age, everyone has a brand, a trend that’s expected to continue. As you prepare for a job hunt, you’ll want to update your relevant social media accounts, including your LinkedIn profile, and include links to them on your resume. While you don’t necessarily want your profiles to be word-for-word what is on your resume, it is a good idea to have the same job history and duties on both.
